Our Musical Director - Alexander Walker

Alexander Walker is one of the most exciting conductors to emerge in recent years and his career has taken him all over the world. Daventry Choral Society has been privileged to have Alex as the Musical Director since 2002. He has brought creativity and flair to its singing and his orchestral and operatic expertise has added new dimensions to its concerts.

He grew up in High Wycombe and played the double bass in the National Youth Orchestra, going on to study music at Bristol University and post-graduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. For three years he studied conducting with Ilya Musin at the St Petersburg State Conservatory and has since kept up his links with Russian orchestras and groups in the countries of the former Soviet Union.

Alex has worked regularly at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and has toured with the Royal Ballet to Russia, USA and Far East. He has conducted ballet at the Ukrainian National Opera, and in 2007 conducted the Northern Ballet Company in venues around Britain. He has worked with many opera companies in Britain and abroad, and will conduct at the Oundle Festival for Opera North, and in Russia in the coming months. Other engagements include visits to Turkey, Poland, Finland, and a Russian Christmas Gala at the Barbican.

Alex is also Musical Director of Abingdon and District Music Society and of Northampton Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra. He also finds time to nurture young musicians at the Junior department of the Royal Academy of Music where he teaches.
